Frequently Asked Questions

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. It reflects the ranking of results shown by search engines like Google in response to a search query. SERPs usually contains organic search results, advertisements, featured snippets, AI overviews, knowledge graphs, and other types of results depending on the search query.

SERP Volatility is a measure of how much search engine results fluctuate or change over a period of time. High volatility indicates significant changes in rankings, which often occurs during search engine algorithm updates. Low volatility suggests a more stable search landscape.

Tracking SERP volatility is very important for website owners and SEO professionals. It helps you distinguish, if your ranking changes, between your own actions (page content updates, technical changes, etc.) and a search engine update. It also allows you to respond quickly to algorithm changes that might affect your visibility on the web. It also provides a historical context that can help explain fluctuations in your traffic. Finally, monitoring SERP volatility helps you make data-driven decisions about when to make SEO changes vs. when to wait for the search landscape to settle down. Ultimately, staying informed about SERP volatility gives you a competitive advantage and helps protect your search visibility investment.

We aggregate SERP volatility data from 12 major (and well-known) SERP volatility providers and calculate a weighted average (based on our own evaluation of each tool) using a score from 0 to 10 after normalizing the original score from each provider. This comprehensive approach ensures that our volatility score represents a consensus view of the search landscape.

Not all SERP tracking providers release their volatility data at the same time. A lot of them run their ranking analysis randomly, overnight, during the day, or even one day later before publishing their results. Some of them update their volatility score multiple times throughout the day. On WireBoard, we monitor all 12 providers (regularly during the day), and we add/update our database as soon as new data becomes available. This means that the "Current Volatility Score" changes throughout the day and becomes more accurate as the day progresses. Early in the day, the score includes fewer data providers, while as the day passes, new data is taken into account. This logic ensures that you always have the most current data available across SEO tools.

All times displayed use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Yes, WireBoard SERP tool is completely free to use. We believe in making search volatility data accessible to everyone, from individual website owners to large enterprises.
