AI Answers Are Still the Storm Front
The loudest weather system today is AI Search pressure on publishers. Search Engine Journal reports that Judge Amit Mehta pressed Google in the Penske Media case over whether Search dominance lets Google use publisher content inside AI answers while sending fewer users back to those publishers. That matters beyond big media: if Google answers more questions on the results page, every site owner has to earn the click harder.
Google is trying to answer that criticism with more visible links. Search Engine Roundtable reported on August 26 that Google added link carousels for developing topics inside AI Mode, after already adding them to AI Overviews. Google’s own Search Central documentation also recently pushed the Preferred Sources button, which lets publishers ask loyal readers to mark them as a favored source.
Rankings: Choppy, Not Chaotic
Today’s partial volatility score is 5.4/10, a moderate-high breeze, but not a thunderstorm. The last few completed days were normal, then today ticked up. Search Engine Roundtable also noted post-spam-update ranking chatter on August 26, so treat this as unsettled air after last week’s rollout, not proof of a fresh broad update. Google’s dashboard shows the August 2026 spam update ran from August 18 to August 21.
Tracking May Get Foggy
Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable both covered Google’s new google.com/goto redirects in search result links. For normal users, this likely changes little. For rank trackers and SEO tools, it may make Google results harder to scrape, so expect possible reporting weirdness over the next few days.
What to Do
- Check Search Console against pre-August 18 baselines.
- Add or promote the Preferred Sources button if repeat readers matter.
- Do not panic over one day of tool noise.
- Make pages worth clicking after an AI summary gives away the basics.
