Core Update Under Low Clouds
Google’s May 2026 core update is still rolling out, now on day 6, after starting on May 21 at 8:40 a.m. Pacific. Google says the rollout may take up to 2 weeks, and both Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal confirm there is no special new recovery playbook here: this is a broad re-scoring of search quality, not a manual penalty wave.
The strange part: the weather is not stormy. SERP volatility has cooled into a 7-day normal stretch, with today’s partial score at 4.5/10 and yesterday at 4.0/10. That means the update is active, but the public ranking surface is not shaking hard right now. Treat today’s data like a radar scan, not a final forecast.
Reporting Fog In Search Console
Search Engine Roundtable flagged a fresh Google Discover reporting bug for May 21, where clicks and impressions may look lower because of a logging issue, not because Discover visibility actually dropped. Search Engine Land also reported that the Search Console links report broke last week and is temporarily showing older data while Google fixes it.
So if traffic reports look weird, do not panic-edit pages yet. Some of the instruments are fogged up.
AI Search Pressure Builds
The bigger climate shift is AI. Google’s Nick Fox says content needs to go deeper than basic summaries, while Sundar Pichai is talking about Search, Gemini, and agents blending into one task-running layer. Google’s own AI Search guidance says the fundamentals still apply: make unique, helpful content, keep pages crawlable, use strong images or videos where useful, and keep Business Profile or Merchant Center data current.
