Another Monday, Another Ranking Jolt
Google rankings are shaking hard again this morning. Search Engine Roundtable reports an unconfirmed ranking update, with tracking tools and site owners both seeing big movement. One site owner described it as "Absolutely horrible Monday again, almost identical to last week. Sat/Sun were fairly normal, today complete tank." Another said traffic volume was high but conversions were way down.
This fits a pattern. Our tracker shows rankings have been moderately turbulent for a full month, and the trend is still pointing up. Sunday was calmer at 6.2, but today's early reading is already 7.9/10, with SEMrush at 9.4 and Wincher and Serpstat both at 10. That number is partial and will change as more providers report. Before today, there were spikes on October 20-21 and on Saturday, October 24th.
Read Your Rank Tracker With Caution
Some of the movement may not be real. According to Nozzle, Google has been sending some rank-tracking tools results pages that look complete but list the wrong sites, peaking at 25% and running at 5-11% a day since October 1. In plain terms, your rank tracker might show a drop that never happened. Your own Search Console data is more reliable, though forum users report it lagging by 52 hours to a week.
A Core Update Looks Likely
Search Engine Journal covered a prediction model that puts the chance of a Google update in the next 30 days at 96.8%. It points to late October through mid-November as the most likely window. Google hasn't run a broad core update since May.
Google Search Central also updated its user-generated spam guide with advice on keeping link-shared content out of the index and watching for abuse in Search Console. If your site has forums, comments or user profiles, read it.
What to Do
- Track trends in Search Console clicks rather than daily rank-tracker swings.
- Note today's date in your reports so you can match traffic changes to the update later.
- Clean up thin pages or spam created by users before a core update arrives.
