Preferred Sources Goes Global
The clearest SEO signal in the last 48 hours is Google expanding Preferred Sources to all supported languages. Google Search Central’s April 30 changelog says the feature is now available wherever Google Search supports the language, with translated button assets for publishers. Google’s own announcement adds the money stat: readers are twice as likely to click through after marking a site as a Preferred Source, and users have already selected 200,000+ unique sites.
Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal both read this the same way: this is not a magic ranking button, but it is a practical audience signal. If your readers actively choose your site, Google may show more of your fresh content in Top Stories and related surfaces for those users. That matters most for publishers, local news, niche blogs, and brands with loyal audiences.
Indexing Chatter Under Gray Skies
Search Engine Roundtable flagged a growing community complaint from May 1: some SEOs are seeing more URLs fall out of Google’s index since early April. Google’s John Mueller pushed back, saying he does not see anything exceptional, so treat this as smoke, not fire. Still, if important pages lose impressions suddenly, check Search Console’s page indexing report before assuming rankings alone are the problem.

Add a Preferred Sources CTA near newsletter, follow, or membership prompts. Audit key pages that vanished from Search Console, but do not panic-delete or mass-resubmit. Fresh, trusted, repeat-visit content is the play.
