Rankings Boil Over
Search results got rougher today. Our partial score hit 8.2/10, the highest point after a month that stayed in the moderate-high 6-to-8 range the whole time. The providers don't agree, though: SEMrush, Wincher, Serpstat and Accuranker sit at or near the 10/10 maximum, while SimilarWeb and Algoroo read a calm 3.6-3.7.
This is the third spike in a little over a week. Search Engine Roundtable flagged an unconfirmed update on October 24, then a larger spike in volatility, along with an increase in SEO community chatter on the 27th.
There's a catch. Semrush confirmed that Google is returning inaccurate search results to some automated ranking tools, and Ahrefs, AccuRanker, BrightLocal and other rank trackers have reported similar issues since September. Some of today's 10/10 readings may come from that bad data rather than real ranking changes.
AI Search Keeps Changing Shape
- Google is testing buttons at the top of AI Overviews that suggest narrower searches. Clicking the refinement bubble does not change the query, instead, it takes you into AI Mode
- Sponsored products, ads, within the organic product results in AI Mode are being tested
- Ads in AI Mode are expanding to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore
All of these give Google more ways to keep searchers on Google instead of clicking through to your site.
Spam Rules Get Wider
Google updated its user-generated spam guide on October 26 with guidance on blocking indexing of link-shared content, meaning pages that people share by link but that aren't meant to show up in search. Search Engine Journal reads this as a sign that Google's spam fight is expanding to new kinds of platforms, tools, and services.
What to Do
- Check Search Console clicks and impressions before you trust a rank tracker's alarm
- If your platform lets users create pages, use noindex to keep private shared links out of Google's index
- Search Console only shows a sampling of links, so a short spam link list there doesn't mean your site is clean
