Rankings Still Gusty
Search results are still moderate-high turbulent at 7.5/10 so far today, but the wind is easing after a hot run that peaked around 8/10 on October 9. The September spam update finished on October 8, so some lingering ranking churn is not surprising, but today’s story is more about messy Search behavior than a fresh rollout.
Migration Trouble Is the Big Watch
The sharpest warning today is for anyone moving domains. Search Engine Roundtable spotted a case where a site migrated earlier in 2026, recovered by April, then four months later saw Google show the old domain again, while the new domain’s pages fell into “crawled, currently not indexed.” John Mueller said migrations can sometimes take a long time to fully process and advised setting the Change of Address for both www and non-www versions. Search Engine Journal added the practical angle: check old internal links, redirect chains, URL-to-URL redirects, SSL on the old domain, and updated XML sitemaps because bad signals can confuse Google’s canonical choice, meaning which version it decides to index.
Discover May Be Getting More AI-Like
Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable both flagged a Google job posting suggesting Discover could shift toward a “proactive, hyper-personalized concierge” with AI-enabled formats and more action-oriented recommendations. For publishers and content-heavy sites, that matters because Discover can be a major traffic source, and a more assistant-like feed may send fewer simple article clicks.
What to Do
- Do not panic over today’s Search Console custom date bug. Preset filters still work, and Search Engine Land says this is a Google-side issue.
- If migrating domains, audit redirects, sitemaps, canonicals, and both host versions.
