Volatility Holding Hot
Google rankings are still choppy. Today’s partial volatility score is 7.9/10, with several providers already flashing severe movement. The bigger story is the trend: after a calm stretch in mid-September, the SERPs have been in a moderate-high pattern since September 23, peaking at 8/10 on October 9 and holding near that level today. This is not panic weather, but it is not stable weather either.
Spam Update Aftershocks
The September 2026 spam update finished on October 8 after nearly 14 days, and multiple sources agree it was unusually drawn out compared with earlier 2026 spam updates. Search Engine Roundtable flagged several impact waves, including September 25-27, September 30, and October 4-6. Search Engine Land called the rollout “pretty impactful,” while Search Engine Journal warns not to trust rank trackers alone because some late-September tracker swings may have reflected bad automated SERP data rather than real user-facing changes.
Fresh Google Signals
Google’s newest Search Central documentation is worth watching: the UGC Fresh Data Program, added October 8, gives large forum and social platforms a special pipeline to send fresh user-generated content and engagement data to Google. It does not guarantee visibility, but it shows Google wants fresher first-hand discussion in Search. Search Engine Land also surfaced the program, framing it as a way for eligible platforms to get fresh UGC processed faster.
Bottom Line
- Check Search Console clicks and impressions, not just rank trackers.
- Compare traffic before, during, and after September 24 to October 8.
- Audit thin AI content, fake author profiles, and low-value pages before Google does.
