Another Unconfirmed Shake-Up Hits Google
Google rankings have been unsettled all month, and the turbulence is getting worse. Our tracker held in the moderate-high range (roughly 6 to 8/10) for the past 30 days. Today it jumped to 8.5/10, with Wincher and Serpstat both at 10. That figure is still partial and could change as more providers report. Search Engine Roundtable flagged a fresh round of movement Monday, which seemed to start about 12 hours before the report, though Google hasn't confirmed anything yet. It follows unconfirmed updates on October 24th, October 20th & 21st, and October 16th.
Your Rank Tracker Might Be Wrong
Some of this volatility may not be real. Semrush confirmed that Google is returning inaccurate search results to some automated ranking tools. Ahrefs, AccuRanker, BrightLocal and other rank trackers have reported similar issues since September. Nozzle, the company that first measured this, sees it as Google's response to AI scraping and grounding, the bulk collection of its results to feed AI answers, and rank trackers get caught in the crossfire. The numbers are big: Nozzle counted 35.7% of the SERPs it checked as poisoned on October 21, so some of what trackers logged as volatility may be swapped results. In plain terms, if your tool says you dropped off page one overnight, you may not have.
Small Doc Changes Worth a Look
- Favicons: Googlebot must now be able to follow redirects from the homepage to the page where the favicon is specified. John Mueller said the wording changed due to AI.
- User-generated content: Google's spam guidance now explicitly includes platforms and tools that let users create shared pages, generated content, and web apps.
- AI Overviews now show up for over 80% of Google Searches.
What to Do
Before you react to a drop, check it in Search Console. Real traffic data beats tracker screenshots, especially right now. If the decline shows up there too, keep a log of the dates and wait for things to settle before making big changes.
