WireBoard vs Chartbeat: Real-Time Web Analytics for Newsrooms (2026)

Both products call themselves real-time. Both serve newsrooms. One ships an editorial preset; the other ships widgets a newsroom composes into the dashboard they need. The Chartbeat alternative case for teams composing the surface themselves.

WireBoard's live dashboard
WireBoard's live dashboard.

The 30-second answer

Both tools serve newsrooms. They take opposite approaches to it.

Pick Chartbeat if you specifically want its newsroom-specific tools that WireBoard does not ship: the on-page Heads Up Display overlay, Headline and Image Testing, and Engaged Time and Recirculation as canonical metrics. The product was built for editorial teams, and you'll be quoted by sales.

Pick WireBoard if you want to build the newsroom dashboard your team actually needs, widget by widget, instead of inheriting someone else's layout. The same composable surface fits a publisher's homepage view, a SaaS sign-up funnel, an e-commerce checkout monitor, or an agency's per-client board. Sign-up is a script tag and two minutes, prices are published, every feature ships on every plan including the free one, and the dashboard you compose is yours.

The rest of this post unpacks the differences, where each one wins, the prices, and how to decide for yourself.

What is each tool actually built to do?

Chartbeat is content analytics for digital publishers, end of scope. Launched in 2009, now operating out of Austin, Texas after Cuadrilla Capital's 2022 acquisition. Its customer base is mostly newsrooms. The product surface is built around story performance: a fixed real-time view, a wall-display preset for the newsroom, an on-page overlay for editors curating the homepage.

WireBoard is real-time web analytics built around independent, composable widgets. Newsrooms are one of the audiences it serves directly. SwissOps Ltd. builds and operates it in the EU, with the entire pipeline (collection, processing, storage, dashboards) running on EU infrastructure we operate end-to-end. The surface: 60+ widgets, drag-and-drop layout, three themes, multiple dashboards per site, real-time funnels, goals with revenue per tier, custom events, multi-site live aggregation, and an SEO suite covering SERP volatility and Google Core and Spam Updates. A newsroom can compose a wall-display board with live concurrent visitors, live pages being read, real-time traffic sources, and a real-time funnel for newsletter sign-ups, all on one screen, exactly to their workflow. The same surface fits a SaaS team, an e-commerce shop, an agency, or a WordPress site owner without compromise.

The products overlap on the live newsroom screen. They diverge on what the rest of the surface does.

"Real-time" means something different in each product

Both products use the word. The architecture under the word is different, and the architecture is the actual story.

Chartbeat's public Real-Time API documentation describes the interface as "data that is updated every three seconds." Their canonical view is built on three numbers (Concurrents, Recirculation, Engaged Time) and is published through a polled API: the dashboard reads new values at a fast, fixed cadence.

WireBoard streams. The live visitor counter, the live view of which pages are being read, the world map, traffic sources, the device breakdown, and the real-time funnels update as events arrive, not on a schedule. The public features page describes its concurrent-visitor scope as "Full day and beyond," not a trailing window. We built the pipeline in-house so streaming could be the floor on every plan, including the free one.

WireBoard's live dashboard, streaming in real time.

Most people won't consciously notice the difference between a three-second refresh and a sub-second update. But that's not the point — the architecture choice changes what the product can do, not just how it feels. Polling fetches new data on a fixed schedule; streaming reacts the moment an event happens. With polling, features like real-time funnels, the live event feed, and the live user journey are always capped by that interval — no matter how short you make it. Streaming turns the dashboard into a continuous picture of your site rather than a snapshot every few seconds. That's why we chose streaming.

What Chartbeat ships that WireBoard doesn't

Chartbeat has been selling to publishers since 2009, and the shape of the product reflects that focus. Several capabilities are not in WireBoard today.

  • A pre-built, newsroom-specific preset (the Big Board). Chartbeat's Big Board is an opinionated newsroom layout, ready out of the box, centered on Concurrents, Recirculation, and Engaged Time. WireBoard ships a populated default template plus the widgets to compose a newsroom layout exactly to your specs, but it does not ship a newsroom-specific preset by default. If you want a ready-made editorial layout, that is on Chartbeat's side.
  • The Heads Up Display. An on-page overlay that drops onto your homepage, section, or article and shows clicks per minute, Quality Clicks, scroll depth, and concurrent readers per link, right where you make curation decisions. WireBoard has nothing equivalent.
  • Headline and Image Testing. A live A/B testing add-on in the Testing Performance Suite, picking winners by Quality Clicks (a click followed by at least 15 seconds of post-click engagement) with AI-suggested headline variants. WireBoard does not ship headline testing.
  • Engagement metrics designed for content. Engaged Time and Recirculation are first-class numbers in Chartbeat. WireBoard tracks time on page and bounce rate, but it doesn't compute Recirculation or Engaged Time per Chartbeat's User Engagement Tracking Methodology.
  • Performance Suites for benchmarking and BI. Paid tiers add Reader Experience, Benchmarking (Cohorts, Tubular Viewpoint), and Analytics Pro (Datastream, Data Lab). WireBoard has no competitor benchmarking layer or BI workbench. (WireBoard does ship a public read-only REST and Live event-stream API at api.wireboard.io, with official JavaScript and Python SDKs and an MCP server for LLM agents, so pulling your analytics into your own product, BI tool, or AI workflow is supported — the gap is the pre-built benchmarking surface itself, not the data access.)
  • Unlimited seats and a dedicated account manager from the entry plan. Chartbeat's Essentials plan includes both. WireBoard's seats scale with the tier (3 on Micro, up to 50 on Pro Plus); dedicated support sits at Enterprise.

If you want a fully pre-configured editorial tool with newsroom-specific overlays and add-ons baked in, those gaps matter.

What WireBoard ships that Chartbeat doesn't

These ship on every plan, free included, and apply equally to a newsroom and to any other site.

  • A composition surface, not a preset. Sign up and land on a populated default template. From there, a newsroom can build a wall-display board (live concurrent visitors, live pages being read, live traffic sources, real-time newsletter signup funnel, world map, the SERP volatility view for the SEO team), a second board for the audience desk's weekly review, a third for editor-by-editor performance, a fourth for the live-blog producer. Pick a theme (Light, Dark, or Future), arrange the 60+ real-time widgets in the order your team actually reads traffic, resize to taste. The same surface fits a SaaS sign-up funnel, an e-commerce checkout monitor, or an agency's per-client board. Chartbeat ships one opinionated editorial layout; WireBoard ships the widgets and the canvas, and the dashboard you compose is yours.
Customize every detail to your liking.
  • Multi-site live aggregation in one widget. Run several sites and want one screen that streams them all together? WireBoard treats multi-site as a single live widget. Drill down to one site at any moment.
Aggregated view of multiple websites
Aggregated view of multiple websites.
  • Goals and real-time funnels. URL goals, custom event goals, or session goals. Conversion count, conversion rate, revenue per goal, revenue split by event property value (by plan tier, by package, by SKU). Real-time funnels mix pageviews and events in any order.
  • The SEO suite. SERP volatility today, the Google Core and Spam Updates timeline, and a per-country public holiday overlay on every chart. Tracking Google's behavior, not your keyword rankings, and inside the same dashboard as your traffic data. Chartbeat doesn't ship anything like it.

  • Self-serve sign-up, free plan, every feature on every plan. A script tag, two minutes, and the free plan is permanent: 50,000 page views per month, two sites, three dashboards, full feature surface. No credit card.
  • Public dashboards, embed tokens, Streamer Mode. Drop a live dashboard into a client portal or intranet with a token-based embed. Streamer Mode blurs your domains and URLs for screen sharing.
  • Annotation layer with four built-in sources. Mark every time-axis chart with deploys, campaigns, Google updates, SERP volatility days, and per-country public holidays.

For newsrooms weighing WireBoard as a Chartbeat alternative

Newsrooms arrive here when they want a live surface that follows their own workflow, not an editorial preset imposed from outside. WireBoard's lead is live data: the visitor counter, the live feed of currently-read pages, the world map, and traffic sources all stream the moment a hit lands. When a story climbs, you see it sub-second live, not every three seconds via polling. Around the core: more than sixty drag-and-drop widgets, multiple dashboards per site, and three themes.

Need to compose a wall display for the desk, concurrent visitors, currently-read pages, sources, newsletter-signup funnel? The widgets are in your hands. Google-update morning? SERP volatility and the Core-and-Spam-Update timeline sit right next to your traffic, which Chartbeat does not ship. The newsroom-specific tools Chartbeat ships (Heads Up Display, Engaged Time, Headline Testing) do not ship in WireBoard; if those are doing real work for your editors, keep paying for them.

Self-serve signup, a permanent Free Plan covering 50,000 page views on two sites, and every feature on every paid tier, no quoting process, no Performance Suites surcharge. If Chartbeat's newsroom toolkit is not necessary for your team or does not fit your budget, WireBoard is the Chartbeat alternative built on composition, not preset.

Where does your data physically live?

Chartbeat operates as a US company. Per their public Data Security and Privacy page, "All Chartbeat servers are hosted on Amazon Web Services." Chartbeat positions itself as GDPR compliant and maintains a GDPR-specific help page explaining its posture; whether that meets your specific data-protection requirements is a question for your DPO.

WireBoard runs the entire pipeline on EU infrastructure SwissOps Ltd. operates end-to-end. Collection, processing, storage, dashboards: no third-party ingestion services, no external pipelines. IP addresses are anonymized at collection; only country is retained. Account deletion purges analytics data within 30 days under the GDPR Right to Erasure. Cookies are on by default for accuracy, with a one-switch cookieless mode under Legitimate Interest.

A newsroom in New York may not care where the bytes physically sit. A government agency in Brussels, a hospital in Munich, or a Swiss bank likely will.

What does each one cost (and why won't one of them tell you)?

Prices below were recorded from each company's published pricing page in May 2026. Both Chartbeat and WireBoard adjust pricing periodically. Before making a buying decision, verify current rates on the Chartbeat pricing page and the WireBoard pricing page.

Two pricing philosophies, and one of them is "talk to sales."

Chartbeat's tiers

Chartbeat publishes a four-tier table on its pricing page. Every tier's CTA is "Talk to Sales." There are no public dollar figures, no pageview brackets, no monthly or annual commitments listed.

Plan Price What's included
Essentials Quote, scales with pageviews Real-time content performance, Big Board, multi-site views, on-page overlay, CSV export, real-time video dashboard, dedicated account manager, unlimited seats, 13 months of history
Plus Quote Everything in Essentials, plus one Performance Suite (Reader Experience, Testing, Benchmarking, or Analytics Pro)
Premium Quote Everything in Essentials, plus three Performance Suites
Enterprise Quote Everything in Essentials, all four Performance Suites, single sign-on

Source: chartbeat.com/product/chartbeat-pricing. Chartbeat's own copy: "Chartbeat pricing scales with you: it's based on your website and native app pageviews. Speak with our team to find the right plan for your team." Third-party review sites quote $7,000 to $13,000+ per year for entry tiers; those figures don't appear on Chartbeat's own page, so we don't cite them as authoritative.

WireBoard's tiers

Plan Monthly Yearly Page views/mo Sites Dashboards Team seats History
Free Plan $0 $0 forever 50,000 2 3 1 30 days
Micro $9 $90/yr 100,000 50 100 3 3 years
Small $19 $190/yr 250,000 50 100 5 3 years
Medium $24 $240/yr 500,000 50 100 10 3 years
Large $49 $490/yr 1,000,000 50 100 15 3 years
Extra Large $99 $990/yr 3,000,000 50 100 20 3 years
Pro $199 $1,990/yr 6,000,000 50 100 30 3 years
Pro Plus $399 $3,990/yr 12,000,000 100 200 50 3 years
Enterprise Custom Custom Custom Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited Custom

Every feature is on every plan. Quotas (page views, sites, dashboards, history depth, team seats) scale up; the feature surface stays the same. Yearly billing saves about 17%.

What this actually means for a buyer

WireBoard's path: drop in the script tag, see live data, decide later whether to upgrade. Chartbeat's path: fill the form, take the call, receive the quote, sign the contract. Both can be the right answer. They are not the same product motion.

Why this comparison is in Patrick's voice

"I run WireBoard. Of course I want you to pick us. The way I want you to pick us is by reading an honest comparison and deciding on the merits. The newsroom toolkit Chartbeat ships is real. The price gap is real. The pricing-page-versus-sales-call difference is real. None of those facts are a reason to undersell what we do."

Patrick Wunderlin, founder of WireBoard.io

Verifiability. Every Chartbeat claim points at a public URL on chartbeat.com, docs.chartbeat.com, or help.chartbeat.com. Every WireBoard claim points at our product surface (wireboard.io/features, wireboard.io/pricing, wireboard.io/seo). If anything here doesn't line up with either site, tell me and I will fix it.

Customer signal. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable, a publisher who has covered the search industry for two decades, runs WireBoard on his site. Not a newsroom in the Chartbeat sense, but a publisher whose work depends on watching SERP volatility, Google Core and Spam Updates, and search traffic live as it happens. That use case is exactly what the SEO suite was built for.

The fastest way to decide for yourself

Don't decide on theory. Install both side by side on a real site and look at them with your own data.

  1. Sign up for WireBoard's free plan at wireboard.io/register. Drop the script tag in. The live visitor counter, the live pages widget, the world map, traffic sources, and the device breakdown will be streaming within minutes.
  2. Request a Chartbeat demo or trial at chartbeat.com. Their site offers a "Get a Demo" call; third-party sources reference a 30-day trial. The entry path depends on your conversation with their sales team.
  3. Compare them side by side on your own data. Open both dashboards on your real site, watch traffic arrive, and ask whether the metrics, the layouts, and the refresh behavior fit the way you actually work.

The question isn't which tool has more features. It's which one answers the questions you're actually asking when you open the dashboard.
