Rankings Cool Off
Google results are drifting back into calmer air. After a moderate September 1-4 run in the 5.1-5.4/10 range, today's partial score sits at 3.7/10, with only half the providers reporting so far. Treat that as a cooling signal, not a final reading. One provider is still flashing hot, but most are quiet, so this looks more like uneven pockets of movement than a search-wide storm.
AI Search Is the Real Front
The bigger story is traffic pressure from AI-shaped search. Search Engine Land reported on September 4 that USA TODAY is restructuring its audience team because search traffic is under pressure and platforms are keeping more user activity inside their own experiences. That is the publisher version of what many site owners are feeling: impressions may still exist, but clicks are harder to earn.
Search Engine Journal adds the nuance: people are not simply leaving Google for AI. Similarweb data showed 95% of ChatGPT users also use Google, while other research found fewer traditional searches among households with ChatGPT Search access. Translation: your customer may still be searching, but the journey is more fragmented.
Google's official Search Central rollout of Search Generative AI performance reports now gives site owners visibility into AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover AI impressions, including pages, countries, devices, and dates. The catch: it is visibility data, not a clean replacement for lost click reporting.
Watch the SERP Features
Search Engine Roundtable flagged two practical wrinkles: publisher content appearing in web results but disappearing from the Google News tab, and Google Jobs showing stale or missing fresh listings. Search Engine Land also noted a Gemini 3.8 Flash AI Mode citation bug that was fixed quickly.
What to Do
Check Search Console by page, query, and search appearance before blaming rankings. If traffic is down but impressions are steady, the problem may be Google keeping the answer, product, job, or news experience on the results page.
