AI Spam Rules Get Teeth
Google's clearest signal today is simple: AI answers are now explicitly covered by Search spam policies. Google Search Central updated its documentation on May 15 to clarify that spam rules apply to generative AI responses in Search, not just classic blue-link rankings. The spam policy page now describes manipulation of generative AI responses as part of spam behavior, and Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Land both surfaced the change today.
For site owners, this matters because the "how do we get mentioned in AI Overviews?" gold rush is moving into a more policed phase. If a tactic would be shady in normal SEO, fake authority, doorway pages, hidden text, link schemes, or mass-produced junk, assume it can also backfire in AI search.
Rankings Stay Choppy
The ranking weather remains moderate-high, not catastrophic, but not calm either. Today's partial volatility score is 6.2/10, and the last completed week has held in the same unsettled band. Search Engine Roundtable reported heated movement around May 13 and May 14, with community chatter around ranking swings, Discover drops, and indexing complaints.

AI Traffic Gets Easier to Measure
Google Analytics added an AI Assistant channel on May 13, separating traffic from recognized AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Search Engine Journal notes this reduces the need for custom regex tracking, while Google's own Analytics update says the new channel helps compare AI traffic with organic search.
