Rankings Stay Gusty
Google results are still moving like unsettled summer weather. Search Engine Roundtable flagged an unconfirmed ranking shakeup that started late July 23, intensified on July 24, and carried through the weekend, with tracker spikes and SEO community chatter about traffic drops, swings, and weak conversions.
Our volatility picture matches that: completed scores have stayed in the moderate-high zone since July 14, peaking at 7.2/10 on July 19 and holding near 6.6 to 6.8 through July 26. Today’s 5.4/10 is only partial, based on 6 of 12 providers, so don’t treat the sky as clear yet.
Review Markup Gets Stricter
The clearest official change is about review snippets, the star-rating-style enhancements Google may show in search. Google’s Search Central changelog says it added a July 24 guideline on fake and undisclosed incentivized reviews “to improve user review transparency.” Search Engine Roundtable and Search Engine Land both covered the update, and SEJ added that this can connect to manual action risk.
In plain English: if reviews were bought, swapped for discounts, generated, or not based on real experience, don’t mark them up for Google stars. Google’s docs now explicitly reject reviews that are fake or not clearly disclosed as incentivized.
Thin Content Watch
SEJ also reported today on a forum hit by a partial manual action for thin content, with SEOs suspecting mass AI-generated forum replies may have contributed. That is not proof of an AI penalty, but the lesson is obvious: content needs real human value, not endless machine filler.
What to Do
Audit review markup, disclose incentives clearly, and pause any scaled AI publishing that does not add first-hand experience. If rankings moved this weekend, wait for another data cycle before making drastic changes.
