AI Mode Is the Front Moving In
The strongest weather system today is AI Mode leakage from regular Search. Search Engine Roundtable reports that Google is testing links inside AI Overviews that look like normal links, but send users into AI Mode instead of out to publisher pages. That matters because a site owner can earn visibility in the AI box and still lose the click if Google keeps the user inside its own answer flow.
This lines up with Search Engine Journal's September 21 coverage of research saying AI Mode reduced external clicks and kept users inside Google longer in a randomized field experiment. In plain English: ranking is becoming less equal to traffic. Visibility still matters, but the click path is getting leakier.
Spam and Indexing Static
Roundtable also flagged public Gemini NotebookLM pages being used for parasite-style spam, with reports of thousands of indexed pages for adult, coupon, and other low-quality queries. This looks like the kind of mess Google can clean up quickly, but it is another reminder that new Google surfaces keep creating new spam doors.
Search Engine Journal separately reports that job board operators say Indexing API approval requests have gone unanswered for months, while Google still recommends the API for job posting URLs. If job listings are your business, keep submitting XML sitemaps and do not rely on API access alone.
Weather Reading
SERP volatility has cooled from last week's 6.0 to 6.2/10 chop to 4.9 yesterday and 4.7 partial today, so this is not storm weather. Google Search Central's latest visible documentation change was September 18, around EEA local business result units, while Search Engine Land's recent SEO thread continues the broader theme that ranking alone is not enough if users do not complete the task.
Bottom Line
Audit pages that depend on AI Overview traffic. Track clicks, not just impressions, and tighten titles, summaries, and calls to action so users have a reason to leave Google and visit you.
