Spam Update Still Driving the Weather
Google's September 2026 spam update is still the main storm system. Google's own status dashboard says it began on September 24 at 9:15 a.m. PDT, applies globally and across all languages, and may take up to two weeks to finish. Search Engine Roundtable is now seeing what looks like a third volatility wave from October 4-6, after earlier hits around September 25-27 and September 30.
The live volatility reading is 8.3/10 so far today, but that is still partial. The bigger pattern matters more: rankings have been running moderate-high since September 23, climbed to 7.3 yesterday, and are pushing into storm territory today.
AI And Quality Signals Are Tightening
The spam update is landing while Google is sharpening its quality language. Google Search Central's helpful content documentation, updated October 5, now calls out fake authors, AI headshots, made-up credentials, low-effort automation, originality, accuracy, and actual effort as quality issues site owners should take seriously.
That lines up with Search Engine Land's recent focus on crawling, indexing, serving timelines, manual fact-checking of AI content, and durable AI visibility rather than hacks. Search Engine Journal is also tracking Google's AI search direction, including query fan-out, the way AI Mode and AI Overviews expand one search into multiple related searches. Google's own AI features guide says there is no special AI schema trick. The basics still matter: crawlable pages, strong internal links, useful text, good images or video, accurate structured data, and Search Console verification.
What to Do
Do not rewrite your whole site in panic. Check Search Console by page type and country, especially if traffic dropped after October 4. Remove thin AI pages, fake authorship, copied summaries, doorway-style pages, and anything made mainly to catch search traffic.
