AI Search Is Squeezing the Click Path
The strongest weather system today is AI search reducing publisher traffic. Search Engine Journal covered new research this morning showing that Google AI Mode users clicked out to websites less often, and that hiding AI Overviews increased external clicks without hurting the search experience. In plain English: Google can answer more on the results page, which may mean fewer visitors reaching your site even when your content helped create the answer.
That lines up with what Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable have been watching around Google Discover. Over the last 24-48 hours, Google’s new "Dive deeper" Discover test has been described as an AI-generated topic overview that starts with videos and includes links to related stories. Useful for users, maybe. For publishers, it is another layer between the reader and the original article.
Volatility Is Cooling, Not Calm
Rankings are still choppy. The last completed days sat in the 5.9 to 6.2/10 range, and today’s partial score is 5/10, with some providers flashing hot while others look quiet. Treat that as mixed visibility weather, not panic weather.
Search Engine Roundtable also flagged possible scraper and rank-tracking disruption since mid-September, meaning some third-party SEO tools may be noisier or slower than usual. If your rank tracker looks weird but Search Console traffic is steady, do not make emergency edits yet.
Local and Search Console Notes
Google Search Central’s latest documentation update added local business query support to EEA aggregator and supplier units on September 18. Search Engine Journal also covered the change, noting that approved aggregators can feed local listings while local businesses may appear without extra data work.
Bottom Line
Watch Search Console clicks, Discover traffic, and conversions, not rankings alone. If traffic dips but leads hold, do not overreact. If both fall, improve content that answers real buyer questions and make your brand easy for AI systems to understand.
